External drive with over 90 gigs of Grateful Dead was shocked with static electricity... This drive was exclusively GD alone. No Phil, Ratdog, Rhythm, et al, were lost

Only Grateful Dead on the external drive... 90+ gigs... 500+ shows... over 4+ years collecting those GD downloads

Can anyone suggest anything to help me through my misery??

The HD itself maybe cooked but take it to a data recovery service the data may still be intact just the power on the HD is toast.

Be prepared to pay a hundred or so just to see what if anything they can do. Then it's an hourly rate, forensic lab shit man, black ops, like the movie jacob's ladder. You can backup online fairly cheap also.

Well considering the time saved if the data is intact, $100 may be well worth it. I say go for it.

I actually had TWO external drives (500 gig, and 160 gig)... Most was on the larger. I transfered the Grateful Dead alone, to the smaller. After transferring to the smaller, I deleted the GD on the larger (mistake)... Then the smaller got zapped.

Phil, Ratdog, Rhythm, Hydra, et al... are still on the larger. I still have some GD shows on a laptop, and an MP3 player... So not a complete loss...

Downloading May 77 shows now... While listening to 4-21-1969, The Ark, Boston.

Instead of a fine 77... I think I will begin with my birth-day show from the Fillmore West (3-2-1969)... luckily that show was on my laptop hard-drive... Like a birth, I guess I will have to begin again.

Mostly MP3, but had a mix of SHN and FLAC

Thankfully I have Download-Them-All... I like Firefox..!

My kindest regarsds,

I find this to be a sort of weird coincidence since I just bought a drive this weekend because I maxed my laptop and was afraid if it crashed I'd lose all my shows. I lost one HD this fall at work. IT SUCKS!

Losin all those shows would be like losin a small part of my Be Ing.

Anyway sorry for ramblin, but I did read Seagate has a disc recovery service if you haven't tried one already. Probably cost as much as the drive but maybe less hassle than trying to re acquire the lost shows.

If I can send you a disc or two to help start the healing let me know.

Cool Runnins!

Without being facetious, let me say I'm sorry for your loss. Though I haven't yet lost data on an external hard drive (thank goodness), I've lost data on my internal hard drive, on zip discs, and on servers. I know how it feels.

I myself have been going through hard times, including major computer problems from which I'm only now just emerging. I still don't have my Favorites on my MSN Client, which list comprised over eighty sites, many of which were juicy GD-related gems that are now difficult if not impossible to recreate, as the pathways have over time become opaque. Strange to say, it's like a blow to the solar plexus when stuff like this happens.

If you need replacement .wav's for any Grateful Dead shows, just let me know by way of reply post with your e-mail address, and I'll shoot you an e-mail with my list so we can take it from there. (I'll reply to your post right away so you can modify it and remove your e-mail address.)

I know you're probably disinclined right now to begin rebuilding, given the disgust and pain you must feel. But the sooner you begin rebuilding, the sooner you'll have your collection back and better than ever. If I can help, please let me know.

With best wishes to all,
deadhead66

hey Surfah, been there and done that. After saving my first 50 GB of fantastic shows, I closed my eyes and blew a ben-franklin on a USB 2 external hard drive. For not much more than 100 dollars you can get a weasled-down external one. I went cheap, and bought a 500 GB WD "My Book" external drive without the Fire-Wire and other add-on's. IT IS STRICTLY FOR MY BACKUP. If you want, you can spend a lot more to get the biggest, fastest, best. Mine is self-contained, external, comes with external power cube and USB 2 cable, and has a seamless interface.

125 dollars gets you

500 GB Western Digital "My Book"

or this

tough decision

sorry to hear of your loss and can fully feel the pain!!!

I have about same number of shows on this machine and prior to having a similar misfortune occur I will be taking dead-head_Monte's advice and finally purchasing pic #1, an external drive, instead of continually going with pic #2.

I look forward to having a safe secure spot to archive.

CompSurfahV2, here is to your re-building your library with ease.

If you're gonna replace the external, why not go all the way. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....1 terabyte....

See if you can fill that up.

Oh what a hassle!!!

As a die hard computer nerd, as well as it being my profession, I cannot stress the importance of backups. I would be devastated to lose my collection. My 500Gb My Book drive 90% filled with music is backed up regularly. I think that you should consider a Mirrored NAS/or USB drive. I like the Buffalo. You buy a Terabyte, but you only use a half Terabyte because when you write to it, it automatically mirrors the data to the other drive in the enclosure. One drive crashes, the other automatically has the data. Easy to rebuild in that case too, because you simply put a new drive in the bay that crashed, and you have your mirror back in place.

Dudes, this is 2008. Back the fuck up!

Whoa! Thanks, stagger! I've been wrestling with the back-up issue, terrified of something similar happening to my collection (~200g of GD, lossless). Particularly, I've wondered about Buffalo, as Fry's recently had one on sale, but I'd never heard of the company. Searched around a bit, and the feedback looked good (have to take these web reviews with a grain of salt, anyways; I suspect there are many who are just never fucking happy). I'm cash-poor right now, but I think I will hold out for the mirrored terabyte. Assume that would have to be the cheapest in the long run?

Anyway, thanks again.

The mirrored Tb drive is really two distinct 500Gb drives. And, this is important, you really only get a half terabyte of usable storage. I have filled up that and a hell of a lot in addition, but then I'm a saver.

Oh yeah, I got that. It sounds better than my other plan, I think, which is buy a 500g drive and still be stuck without backup. I'd considered backing up on DVD--understand you can fit ~four shows--but again, this mirrored dealie sounds more cost-effective in the long run.
